Apple Photos 101: How to View, Save & Edit Burst Shots on Your iPhone

Apple Photos 101: How to View, Save & Edit Burst Shots on Your iPhone
Whether you mean to or not, taking burst photos is super easy on the iPhone. In the Camera app, just compose your photo, tap-and-hold the shutter button, and watch the number of pics go up and up until you take your finger off the screen. However, finding that one special keeper out of all of them in the Photos app isn't as intuitive as taking them in the first place.Bursts are best suited for action shots, so you can pick and choose the best angles from fast movement in front of your camera. However, I accidentally hold the shutter button down all the time when taking still shots, causing me to have to find the best one to keep even when I don't want to do all that extra work. Whatever your case may be, here's how it all works.Don't Miss: How to Hide Photos & Videos from Your iPhone's Camera Roll

Step 1: Finding Your Burst PhotosFirst things first, when you take a burst of photos, they will be saved in your Photos app just like every other photo you take with Apple's default shooter. You can see them in the main "Camera Roll" (or "All Photos" for some) album, in the "Bursts" album that's automatically created when you have some, or in any of the auto-created folders that apply such as "Selfies" or "Places." Additionally, you can see them in the "Moments" view in the "Photos" tab.In all of these sections, you can tell right away that they are burst photos because the thumbnail image for the group will be slightly smaller than the rest of the thumbnails, and it will show two other images cascaded behind it. The burst photos won't show up individually to prevent unnecessary clutter and confusion.

Step 2: Viewing Photos in Your Burst GroupAs you can tell, when you tap on a group of bursts from one of the locations above, you will only see that one image that's the main thumbnail. In order to find the one or two photos you want to keep out of the bunch, you would tap on the "Select" button in the menu bar. This brings up the carousel view. Here, you can swipe through and view all of your images in the group, as well as pinch to zoom in and out of each one.You also might notice in the timeline at the bottom, that there's a little gray dot underneath the tiny image that Apple automatically selects as the main one for the burst group. In some cases, you might see gray dots under other image thumbnails; These indicate that Apple's AI thinks those images are good (even if they aren't). One downside here is that you can't choose a new image to be the main thumbnail of your burst group. However, you couldn't select a new Live Photo thumbnail image before either and now you can, so maybe Apple will build a way for us to do so in the near future.

Step 3: Saving Photos in Your Burst GroupIf you couldn't tell already, you can just tap on each image in the group that you want to keep, and each one will show a checkmark in the corner to signify it's been chosen. In the tiny timeline bar at the bottom, a checkmark overlay will also appear on the images that are selected in the group. When you've selected all of the images you want to save, just tap on "Done." Now you'll be presented with two very different options: "Keep Everything" in the group or "Keep Only # Favorite/s." What you choose here is very important.

Keeping EverythingIf you choose to keep everything, all of the photos you selected will now appear as single images in your Photos app in your "Camera Roll" and elsewhere right after the burst group, which stays put. When going back into selection menu of the burst group, you'll notice that all of the images you selected are still selected, and all of the ones that aren't, well, aren't. You are free to deselect and select new photos whenever you want now, and when you hit "Done," the photos will adjust in your albums automatically, disappearing and/or appearing, depending on what changes you made.Don't Miss: How to Drag & Drop Photos on Your iPhone in iOS 11

Keeping Only Your FavoritesFor those times when you're sure you never want to see the unselected items ever again, choose the option to keep only the ones you favorited (i.e., checked). If you previously selected "Keep Everything," this option will no longer appear unless you deselected everything in the burst group first, hit "Done," and then go back to the selection menu to choose your real favorites.Once you tap on "Keep Only # Favorite/s," all of the photos you selected will pop out of the burst group and into their own spots in your albums. The burst group itself will go straight to the "Recently Deleted" album where it will automatically delete after 30 days. If you chose to select all of the photos in the group, then hit "Keep Only # Favorites," all photos will appear in the albums separately but nothing will show up in the deleted album.

Step 4: Editing Your Chosen PhotosIf you didn't go into the selection menu at all, you can edit the automatically chosen image just like any other image. Just hit "Edit" and work your magic. Otherwise, the only way to edit the other images is to select them using Step 3 above, then edit them individually. If you chose "Keep Everything," all of the saved edits will also appear in the burst group. One part that's not great about editing shots in or from a burst group is that they are not Live Photos, which means you can't make use of iOS 11's newer features that lets you Loop, Bounce, or make a long exposure. And that's all there is to it. It's pretty simple once you understand the difference between keeping everything or just your favorites from the burst.Don't Miss: The 8 Best New Features in iOS 11's Photos App for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

The amount of oxygenation of the blood is shown in the finger, which will cause the infrared light to reflect off the skin and to the transmitter which is close by. The fluctuations of oxygenation are picked up by the sensor, which you should wire to the Arduino. By observing the fluctuations in these signals, you are able to detect the heart rate of the subject. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How To: Root Apps Not Working with Magisk? Here's What to Do

How To: Root Apps Not Working with Magisk? Here's What to Do
It's the icing on top of your cake (or whipped cream on top of your Android Pie) of despair. You may have not had the easiest time rooting your device, but you feel like you overcame all of the obstacles. Only now to discover that those very apps and mods you were rooting for still won't work — and the signs point to a lack of root access. Don't lose hope, because we have some tricks up our sleeve. If the problem truly is a lack of root access, you either never really had it, lost it, a setting is off, it's undetected, something is broken for certain apps, or something is blocking your app from using it. There's also the possibility that there's a different problem (other than the absence of root access) in disguise. We will examine and consider all scenarios and offer solutions. After all, root is only as useful as the apps you are using it with — unless, of course, you are modifying files directly, but even then you're probably using a file explorer with root access required.

Step 1: Check Your Root StatusOne reason your apps may not be able to access root is because it isn't there. Maybe you followed our Magisk root guide to the letter, but something still went wrong. How do you truly know unless you check? So first, download the Root Checker app by joeykrim from the link below. Open it and tap "Verify Root," then hit "Grant" if prompted to give the app superuser access, then look for a message stating "Congratulations! Root access is properly installed on your device!" If you get this message, root is working on your phone, so it has to be a problem with a specific app — in this case, skip ahead to Step 4. If you didn't get the Congratulations! message, or if Root Checker never prompted you to grant superuser access, move on to Step 2 next.Play Store Link: Root Checker (free)

Step 2: Make Sure Magisk Isn't HibernatedIf Root Checker didn't give you that Congratulations! message, you're most likely not properly rooted. But before you get into the process of re-rooting, you should check to make sure an app or mod isn't breaking your root management system. If you use apps like Greenify, make sure that Magisk Manager is not being put into hibernation mode. If you are using apps that you have to hide Magisk from, such as banking apps, un-hide Magisk and close these apps when you are done.

Step 3: Fix Issues with Root (Or Re-Root)If that wasn't it, you'll need to re-root. You've probably done this already if you tried to root at all, but just to be safe, make sure you are starting out by unlocking your bootloader. If you need help with this part, we've covered the process for many popular modding phones:Bootloader Unlock Guides: Essential PH-1 | OnePlus 5 | OnePlus 5T | OnePlus 6 | OnePlus 6T | Pixel | Pixel 2 | Pixel 3 Next, to finish off the rooting process, we recommend installing TWRP for your recovery. You will then be ready to root using Magisk, which is as simple as flashing a ZIP in TWRP.More Info: How to Install TWRP on Any Phone with an Unlocked Bootloader More Info: How to Root Any Phone with Magisk & TWRP Sometimes the Magisk installation will fail because the custom recovery you are using is outdated. If a recent version of TWRP (3.2.x or higher) isn't available for your device, it is possible to root with Magisk by patching your boot image. To do that, you'll need to download your phone's current stock firmware (i.e., the firmware version that matches your current build number). For Google devices, do that here. For OnePlus, check here. For Essential, look here. If you use another phone, your best bet is to search the XDA forums for your current firmware.Once you have a copy of your current firmware, extract the ZIP or TAR file and pull out the boot.img file. Save this file to your phone's internal storage so that Magisk Manager can access it. Next, open Magisk Manager and tap "Install" from the main menu, hit "Install" again on the prompt, then choose "Patch Boot Image File" and select the extracted IMG file.Magisk will patch the boot image to make it a rooted version, then save this file to your phone's storage. Now, to root, you'll just need to transfer the patched boot image over to your computer and flash it using Fastboot — this part's a bit tricky, so head to the link below for a full walkthrough:More Info: The Complete Guide to Flashing Images Using Fastboot Another method that sometimes works is to uninstall, reboot, then reinstall the newest version of Magisk. Depending on your OS, it may also help to actually downgrade to an older version of Magisk. Typically, this isn't ideal, though. Updated versions address bugs and introduce new features.Don't Miss: How to Install Magisk on Your Rooted Android Device

Step 4: Reboot (The Ol' Cure-All)Restarting your device can solve all sorts of ailments, especially if it's your first reboot since flashing Magisk. So do that now, and when you get back up, check to see if root is working. If it's not, we have more troubleshooting steps below. (1) Reboot from Magisk, (2) Or reboot via Power button

Step 5: Make Sure You're Aware of App Root SettingsSome apps have internal settings that help you gain root access, or they may also prevent root access. Take Ghost Commander File Manager, for instance. There are two different modes of operation: normal and root. You only need root mode to tweak your system using root, but that's likely why you are here. You can also use Ghost Commander to remount file systems. With Ghost Commander specifically, there are a few different ways to enter root mode. One is to access the file path using root: as a prefix (i.e. root: /data). You can also enable it from the home screen if you visit Settings –> Advanced –> Show advanced home items. Another way is to use the tool button for access with a single tap. (1) BusyBox available on Magisk, (2) Setting to enable root options, (3) Root Mode Option on Home Screen Terminal emulators apps are another type of app that typically require a special command to enable root. You usually have to run "su"within the shell to use root. If you aren't asked explicitly whether you want to grant an app superuser access, check out the app's settings to make sure it's not something you are meant to request. Most rooted apps aren't shy about asking, but sometimes it's also easy to overlook.ES File Explorer/Manager PRO is another app in which root must be manually enabled. To do so, press the menu button (upper-left, 3 lines) and tap "Root Explorer." Outside of our three examples, there are plenty of other apps that don't request root by default. To make sure this isn't your problem, head to the app's settings and thoroughly examine all options.

Step 6: Check Out Magisk Manager's Superuser PermissionsDid you know that Magisk Manager has a section of its settings devoted to making sure specific apps are granted root access? Even if this is old news, try toggling any app you are having problems with in that list of apps with superuser access. Also, in Magisk's settings, scroll to the bottom and make sure that those Superuser settings are set up correctly. You can configure Magisk's Superuser settings section to your liking, but the default options are as follows: Superuser Access: Apps and ADB; Multiuser Mode: Only owner has root access; Mount Namespace Mode: Root sessions will inherit its requester's namespace; Automatic Response: Prompt; Request Timeout: 10 Seconds; Superuser Notification: Toast.

Step 7: Update the AppSome apps have a hard time finding root via Magisk because they look for the superuser binaries in a very specific location. The best solution to this problem is to simply update the app. As more and more people use systemless root, more rooted apps adapt to it. If you are already using the most recent version of the app, reach out to the developer to ask for support or look for an alternative app that's been updated more recently.

Step 8: Disable All ModulesYou could think of this next troubleshooting tip as a Magisk safe mode. To make sure a module isn't causing problems with root access, head to the Modules section in Magisk Manager's side menu, then simply disable all modules and reboot. If root works when you get back up, re-enable the modules one by one and reboot after each until you find the culprit.Alternatively, in Magisk Manager's settings, you'll find "Magisk Core Only Mode," or if you can't boot, you can insert a file named ".disable_magisk " in /cache (/data/cache on some devices). This is a good approach if you already know that a particular module is causing your rooting woes. It helps you get in far enough to uninstall the troublemaker.
Step 9: Symlink the SU Binary to a Standard LocationIf you realized in Step 8 that your problem stems from an app looking in the wrong place for Magisk's systemless root binaries, there's another option besides looking for a different app.You can place a pointer or path to SU by creating a symbolic link. This may be accomplished by using an Android terminal emulator to insert the symlink, but MagiskHide will likely fail since SU will now be exposed. As an alternative, XDA Senior Member laggardkernel developed a Magisk module that can do this systemlessly. This does break SafetyNet. The module could be flashed either in Magisk Manager or via a custom recovery, and you can grab it from the link below.Download su-xbin-bind(.zip) I had trouble flashing it, however, and it looks like support has only been provided up to Magisk V12. So you might only be left with the first option of inserting the symlink yourself, which I personally feel breaks too much of the functionality of Magisk.
Step 10: Handle a Faulty Implementation of F2FSIf your device does not use F2FS (Flash-Friendly File System), there's no need to complete this step. If it does, it's possible that the file system is breaking root by preventing Magisk from mounting at boot. There are a different ways to solve this problem, but the most efficient is to find a new kernel without the file system. Another, sometimes more problematic, approach is to reformat your /data partition as ext4. If you decide to go this route, it's easy enough to do through TWRP's "Wipe" option. It's just that some devices designed to use F2FS may have problems booting as ext4.

Step 11: Run ADB in Root Mode with ADBD InsecureOn most stock kernels, ADB (Android Debug Bridge) only runs in secure mode, even if you are rooted. This makes it difficult to access root when you are using ADB to run commands on Android via your desktop. The (root) ADBD Insecure app allows you to run ADBD (Android Debug Bridge Daemon) in "insecure mode," so you can do things like access system files and directories by running the command "adb push/pull" or make your system partition writable using "adb remount." The daemon is what grants access to the shell.ADBD Insecure can be installed from the Google Play Store, or you can simply search it by name from your Play Store app. You'll be required to enable USB debugging, so make sure your Developer Options are enabled by tapping on Settings –> About Phone, then rapidly tapping "Build number" seven times.
Step 12: Install Magisk SELinux ManagerThis is kind of pulling out the big guns, and it may be just as risky as if you took that saying literally. Android uses a principle called Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux for short) to help maintain security. By default, any request made of the operating system that is not explicitly allowed is denied. Software only runs with minimal privilege, providing some damage control against attacks or buggy processing. Depending on the root app, SELinux could be preventing it from doing what you want it to do.SELinux has two modes: "permissive" and "enforcing." In permissive mode, SELinux logs policy violations, but it doesn't block the event. Enforcing mode both logs and blocks every action that violates SELinux policy. XDA Junior Member Jman 420 found and shared a way to enable SELinux permissive mode on boot, which may help with your root crisis, but can also be a risky venture. For one, it's discontinued, so you are on your own. All cautioning aside, there are simply some tools and apps that are notorious for malfunctioning or not working at all in enforcing mode. And for many people, rooting is way too risky. For others, the best things in life involve at least a little bit of risk.Download SELinux Manager Magisk root holds a lot of advantages over traditional rooting methods, but when your apps can't access it, it may not feel too advantageous. After all, one supposed advantage of Magisk is that rooting and then using root is easy. But with such a wide variety of devices, systems, and apps, there are a lot of variables at play — and a lot of potential issues. So if you know of other ways to solve problems with apps accessing root via Magisk, let us know in the comments.Don't Miss: 8 Must-Have Magisk Modules for OnePlus PhonesFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Key Comparison PointsPrice: The price of the app itself. Fees/In-App Purchases: While having to pay for a transcriber app's services isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's important to distinguish between apps that offer enhanced features — like transcriptions done by actual people — that justify their cost and apps that will basically give you more of the same. Account Required: For security purposes, most transcribing apps require you to create an account, though some apps give you the option to sign in using either your Google, Facebook, or Office365 accounts for added convenience. Free Trial: Some paid transcriber apps will let you try out their services for free on some sort of time-based trial. Trials are a great way to check how good these apps are in terms of overall service, so you can have a more informed decision on whether they're worth your time and money. Speech-to-Text: This element covers the various ways transcriber apps can record audio, from direct dictation, to conversion of audio and video files. Naturally, the more options an app has, the better. Transcription Method: Transcriber apps on the whole basically rely on two methods of transcribing your recordings — either via human-based transcriptions where you have a person manually transcribe your recordings, or AI-based transcriptions. Turnaround Time: The amount of time it takes for your to receive your transcribed recording. Besides overall accuracy, fast turnaround times are also ideal — no one wants to wait days to receive their transcripts. Share Options: There are times where you'll need to transfer a copy of your transcripts and recordings to another location or share with a colleague. Though almost all transcriber apps allow for this as far as transcripts go, some have the added ability to share your audio files alongside your transcripts. Save Options: Transcriber apps usually store your audio recordings and transcripts within the app itself, though some provide further options such as automatically sending copies of your transcripts to your email account. Transcription Accuracy: This element is perhaps the most important feature of transcription apps. We evaluated these apps by having them transcribe the same recording under the same circumstances, then we scored them based on the percentage of words they got right. Punctuation: While often taken for granted, punctuation within a transcript significantly aids in readability. Without punctuation, your transcript becomes one gigantic sentence, which can leave you more confused. Import Sound Files: There'll be times where you'll need to transcribe a video or audio recording done outside the Voice Memo app that a colleague shared with you, and having a transcribing app that's capable of converting it from an MP3 or other sound file to a text document will come in handy. Calendar Support: Though not a big feature in the grand scheme of things, a transcribing app that features calendar support gives you an awesome way of reminding yourself of events and tasks that may require you keep your recorder handy. 3D Touch Support: When used in conjunction with a supported transcriber app, this iPhone feature gives you added accessibility and lets you instantly record audio on the fly. Siri Integration: Apple's virtual assistant has become an asset in terms of hands-free use, and when fully supported, can open your transcriber app by voice to start recording an important lecture or meeting.
How We Chose These AppsBefore we started on the task of comparing transcribing apps, we first laid out some ground rules to better determine each apps' strengths and weaknesses. Because a majority of transcribing apps offer a fee-based payment system for the services they provide, we had to sort out which apps provided you the most bang for the buck in terms of pricing and overall speech-to-text accuracy. To determine transcription accuracy in particular, we devised a test based off a speech that was exactly 100 words long. The speech was then dictated in high quality on a separate device, in two separate recordings — one done in a normal tone of voice, with the other recording featuring a heavy accent. The first 50 words of both recordings were then dictated at a normal pace, with the latter half being spoken at a faster speed. From there, we opened each app on our test iPhone and played the recordings from three feet away for the apps to record and transcribe. We then calculated a score based on how many words were missed or erroneously transcribed, and determined the average score gathered from the numbers for each test. So, without further ado, here's our list for the best transcribing apps for iOS.

App 1: TranscribeMeTranscribeMe is a great all around speech-to-text app that's sure to meet all your transcribing needs. This app can fit into almost any budget, regardless of whether you're a student with limited finances or a high-powered lawyer who needs the most accurate transcriptions possible. The app is free to download, and gives you the most variety in terms of transcription services.Install TranscribeMe for free from the iOS App Store For payment and security purposes, the app requires you to create an account in order to use its transcription services. Thankfully, TranscribeMe gives you the ability to log in using either your Facebook or Google account, which means one less password to try to remember. In addition to in-app dictation support, TranscribeMe gives you the ability to import audio recordings done within the Voice Memos app, along with other audio files for speech-to-text conversion. Unfortunately, the "Import Recording" function wasn't functioning during our testing, and had to mark it as such on the chart. As such, this aspect will be updated as soon as we verify its functionality. In terms of service, TranscribeMe gives you a variety of transcription methods to suit almost any budget. Unlike other apps on this list, the app lets you choose between AI or human-based transcriptions, depending on your needs. Unfortunately, the app doesn't offer any free trials for their service, which means you'll have to pay for transcriptions off the bat. While opting for AI-based transcriptions somewhat offsets the lack of free trials with a cost of $0.10 a minute, more precise, human-based conversions can vary depending on what service you choose, along with other options — like faster turnaround time — requested. A standard transcript for a recording that's set to be delivered within one business day will set you back around $2.50 a minute. Of course, you can bring the rates down by either choosing a cheaper service like "First Draft" that only passes through one layer of transcription, setting the turnaround time to a longer time frame, or a combination of both. Bear in mind that in doing so, your transcriptions will take longer to receive. In terms of transcription accuracy, TranscribeMe does extremely well. Human transcriptions are very accurate, averaging out at nearly a hundred percent. AI-based "Machine Express" transcriptions are a little hit or miss, and although it did extremely well when converting a recording with a normal accent, it didn't fare as well and resulted in glaring errors when transcribing speech featuring a heavy accent. (1) Normal Accent, (2) Heavy Accent Unfortunately, TranscribeMe is not without its downsides, chief among these being the price for its services. While using its AI-based Machine Express option will cost you a reasonable $6.00 per hour, human-based transcriptions can start at around $75 an hour and run up to $240 an hour for the premium Verbatim option. Also bear in mind that turnaround time is calculated in business days, so weekends don't count.Clearly, TranscribeMe's premium services are more geared towards companies and professionals who need the absolute best and can afford it. Even still, the app's Machine Express option does a great job in accurately transcribing recordings, making it a solid choice for individuals with tighter wallets.

App 2: Rev Voice RecorderRev Voice Recorder is a great alternative for those seeking professional transcription services at a slightly lower price compared to TranscribeMe's premium transcription services. Like all the other apps on this list, Rev Voice Recorder is free to download from the iOS App Store.Install Rev Voice Recorder for free from the iOS App Store Unlike TranscribeMe, Rev Voice Recorder offers a free trial to try out its services. Basically, your first transcription of up to 10 minutes is free of charge. Keep in mind that this free offer is only for the first transcription, so even if your first transcript is only three minutes long, the trial period will instantly end, and you'll be charged for the second transcription.Rev relies on a dedicated team of people for its transcription service to guarantee accuracy, and it shows. The app boasted the highest overall accuracy in our testing, and precisely transcribed both recordings done with normal and heavy accents to land it an overall score of 99%. Unlike its AI-based counterparts, the transcriptions came complete with punctuation marks to make reading a lot more digestible. Recording done with a heavy accent. This reliance on premium, human-based transcriptions naturally comes with a price, however, as Rev Voice Recorder can be costly for transcriptions of long audio recordings. Though nowhere near the costs associated with TranscribeMe's premium services, a transcript of an hour-long recording using the app's services will cost around $60, making this app less than ideal for students with tight budgets.Besides that, Rev Voice recorder requires you to create an in-app account for security and payment purposes. This can be problematic, as it gives you yet another account containing sensitive financial information, along with associated login credentials to have to keep track of.That said, Rev Voice Recorder is still a great alternative to TranscribeMe, and ultimately costs less to use whenever you're in need of accurate human-based transcription. It also beats out its counterpart in terms of turnaround times, which Rev Voice Recorder guarantees will arrive within 12 hours of submission — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

App 3: Voice RecorderVoice Recorder is a simple app that — while free — requires you to purchase the full version to unlock its transcribing feature. And while its purchase price of $4.99 may seem steep at first glance, its long term value becomes instantly apparent when compared to other apps that will charge you roughly the same price just to transcribe a two or three minute audio recording.Install Voice Recorder & Audio Editor for free from the iOS App Store Voice Recorder is the only app in this list that doesn't require you to create an account in order to use its services, which earns it high marks for instant access. On top of that, the app is incredibly easy to interact with, and features a nifty voice recording page that's skinned in the likeness of a vintage cassette tape recorder. From there, you can easily record, save, and transcribe in a few taps. Text-to-speech conversion happens in real time — tapping the transcribe button instantly transcribes your recording into text right before your eyes. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Voice Recorder is also the only transcriber app on this list that features 3D Touch support for added accessibility, and lets you instantly start a voice recording without having to open the app. This handy feature makes this transcribing app ideal for students and professionals that need to quickly record important tasks such as interviews, journal entries, or observations while on the go.For all the positives that Voice Recorder brings to the table, however, its not without its weaknesses. Besides the general lack of punctuation marks that can make reading extended transcripts a chore, the app scored at the low end of the spectrum with regards to transcription accuracy. While it transcribed the recording done in a normal accent well enough, it faltered when converting the heavy accent test to text, severely bringing its average score to around 90%. This limiting factor ultimately kept Voice Recorder from climbing to the top spot. In all, while Voice Recorder's price is ultimately a bargain when compared to TranscribeMe and Rev Voice Recorder, its inconsistent transcriptions may be a dealbreaker for those who rely on accurate transcriptions for work or school. Nevertheless, it's still a great option for people who'd like to have a fairly reliable transcribing app at a reasonable, one-time price.

App 4: TranscribeThe fourth app on this list is the aptly-named Transcribe. Like TranscribeMe and Rev Voice Recorder, the app is free to download and charges a time-based fee to use its services. Transcribe, however, deviates from its competitors' formulas in some key aspects.Install Transcribe for free from the iOS App Store First off, Transcribe charges a flat fee of $5.00 an hour for its text-to-speech service, and while that might seem expensive at first glance, it's actually cheaper than TranscribeMe's Machine Express $0.10 a minute ($6.00 an hour) transcription service, and Rev Voice Recorder's flat $1.00 a minute ($60.00 an hour) speech-to-text service.Second, Transcribe offers no human-based transcription services, opting instead to rely solely on AI to handle all transcriptions. Given how cheap the service is compared to its competitors, this was most likely done to keep overall costs down for both the company and its customers.Of all the rate-based transcriber apps on this list, Transcribe offers the most generous free trial period, giving you a 15-minute credit as soon as you sign in to see if the app is right up your alley. Unlike Rev's offer of transcribing your first recording (up to 10 minutes) for free, Transcribe lets you convert more than one recording — as long as they fall within the 15-minute window. While it lets you transcribe both audio and video files, Transcribe oddly left out the option of direct in-app dictation, and relies instead on recordings imported from the Voice Memo app. Because of this, any transcriptions done using this app force you to use a separate app for dictation, making it inconvenient.Like other AI-based transcriber apps on this list, Transcribe suffers from a general lack of punctuation marks that can make reading longer texts a hassle. In addition to that, the app suffered low marks for transcription accuracy. The app averaged out at a less than stellar 90% with regards to accuracy, though it did a much better job transcribing the recording with the normal accent as opposed to its heavy accent counterpart. (1) Normal accent, (2) Heavy Accent As bad as those sound, Transcribe has a feature built-in that's proven to be its saving grace. Unlike its competition, Transcribe is the only app on this list that lets you edit your transcripts while simultaneously listening to your recording, and correct any glaring errors for a near-perfect transcription. Because of this, Transcribe is definitely worth a try. And with a 15 minute free trial, what do you have to lose?

App 5: VoiceraVoicera is perhaps the most accessible app on this list, and features an intuitive UI that lets you hit the ground running with regards to recording audio files and transcriptions. And best of all, the transcribing app is completely free to install and use.Install Voicera for free from the iOS App Store Like most of the apps on this list, Voicera requires you to create an account in order to use the app, and lets you use your login credentials from either Google, Office365, Slack, or Salesforce for convenient access. As an added bonus, Voicera is the lone app on the list that features calendar support, giving you a way to remind yourself of any upcoming events like lectures that you want to record and transcribe.Voicera really shines in terms of transcription accuracy, which is impressive considering it's a free app. The app ranked second overall in our testing, averaging 97% in conversion accuracy, and transcribed recordings of both normal and heavy accents with minimal errors. The only weakness we've found was its glaring lack of punctuation marks, which can be a nightmare for longer transcripts. (1) Normal accent, (2) Heavy accent. As handy as Voicera is for recording dictations, the app solely relies on this form of recording audio, and doesn't allow you to import audio files from other apps like Voice Memos. Because of this, the app is less than ideal for moments when you need to transcribe audio files like lectures obtained from a classmate.Unlike Voice Recorder, transcriptions within Voicera aren't done in real-time, and it takes a little time to transcribe recordings. A 1-minute recording, for instance, can take an average of five minutes, and more so for recordings that are much longer. That said, the app does alert you with a notification when your transcription is complete.Despite its limitations, however, Voicera is still an awesome transcribing app that's more than capable of handling your speech-to-text needs. And because it's free to use and features built in calendar support, this app is especially ideal for students who rely on schedules and reminders to stay up to date with events and tasks like recording upcoming lectures.
ConclusionIn the end, TranscribeMe won out due to the balance it achieves with transcription accuracy and an abundance of transcription services that make it accessible on almost any budget. That said, it was an extremely close competition, with each app showing strengths that make it a viable option, such as Voicera's accurate AI-based transcriber, Transcribe's text editing feature, and Voice Recorder's accessibility, just to name a few.Which transcribing app did you end up going with and why? How To: This Boomerang Hack Lets You Post Apple's Live Photos on Instagram

How To: This Boomerang Hack Lets You Post Apple's Live Photos on Instagram
Instagram enthusiasts will be pleased to know that there is finally a way to post your Live Photos on the service. The animated images were supported by Facebook, Tumblr, and Google after the feature was launched on the iPhone 6S, but it's taken Instagram a year to catch on.But where there's an Insta-will, there's a way—so long as you're willing to convert your pictures to Boomerangs before posting them. This neat little trick, discovered by Mashable, gets you around sharing problems with your Live Photos.Don't Miss: Download & Save Any Instagram Photo or Video You Want on AndroidThe easiest way is sharing Live Photos on your Story after converting them to Boomerangs. However, you'll only be able to do this with Live Photos taken in the past 24 hours.First, open the Instagram app and swipe right to access Stories. Then swipe up on the screen to choose from the pictures in your camera roll taken within the 24-hour bracket. 3D Touch the screen to convert the picture to a Boomerang and post it to your Story, share with friends, or add to your camera roll. Once it's in your camera roll, you can then post it directly to Instagram. The Boomerang effect changes the Live Photos (Boomerangs are only 1 second long, instead of the Live Photos' 1.5 seconds), but at least this way you'll be able to share your best Live Photos with the Instagram world.Don't Miss: Save Instagram Photos Without Posting Them (& Stack Filters for the Perfect Pic)There are a few other ways to turn Live Photos to Instagram videos via secondary apps. Mashable's Brett Williams tested out a few of these options, but the big problem with this option is the length of the Live Photo.Instagram only allows users to upload videos longer than 3 seconds, but Live Photos only capture the 1.5 seconds before and after a photo is taken. That means that even when you're able to convert them, you won't be able to upload them. You could also use something like Google's Motion Stills to turn multiple Live Photos into a video compilation, then upload that to Instagram.Otherwise, it looks like Boomerang is the only method of sharing Live Photos on IG for now.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Reinstall Apps Faster After Resetting or Installing a New ROM

How To: Reinstall Apps Faster After Resetting or Installing a New ROM
If you've switched ROMs before or flashed quick mods on your Android device, you've probably used TWRP or another custom recovery to install them. But another great purpose for flashing through a recovery is to install your own custom .zip file filled with everything a fresh ROM needs—namely, all your apps.Flashable .zips may seem like complex files filled with scripts that require years of background knowledge to create, but in reality, they are pretty simple to package yourself. There is plenty you can do with a flashable .zip, like flash new cameras and backups, but in this guide, I'm going to show you how to create a .zip to install multiple apps (using their .apk files) and a custom boot animation without having to use a root file explorer.
Step 1: Download the Template ZIPA flashable .zip consists of two folders; a META-INF folder that contains the update-binary and updater-script files, and a System folder that houses all the files you want to add to your device. The update-binary files contains the code that carries out the instructions laid out in the updater-script, and are universal for all flashable .zips.Download a Flashable ZIP Template (.zip) Since you are going to be using the .zip you create to flash some apps or a new boot animation, you don't have to worry about anything other the System folder, so you can use the template linked above to grab a copy of a preconfigured archive with the correct META-INF files.
Step 2: Add Files to the ZIPThere are a few ways to add your .apks or animations to the template .zip depending on your personal preference. The first requires the use a .zip creation tool like WinRAR or WinZip to edit the existing template, or you can use the system archiver that is already installed on your computer to extract and recompress the template.Keep in mind that the process will vary depending on which OS and method you choose, but the most important thing to take note of is the file system structure.

Using a ZIP ProgramIf you are using a .zip creator program, the first step is to open the app's main menu and select the option to open an existing .zip file. This option will be in a different location depending on your OS, but in this guide, I will be using WinZip on a Mac running OS X Yosemite. Once the .zip is open, you'll be able to navigate through its folders to add or remove as many folders or files you like. However, do not mess with the contents of the META-INF folder. To install .apks, you will need to add a folder named "app" (case sensitive) to the System folder. Place all of the APKs you want installed in that folder, then hit "Save" to have the program add them to the archive. Boot animations work the same way, but instead of placing the bootanimation.zip in the "app" folder, you will place them in "System/system/media" (case sensitive).

Creating a New ZIPIf you'd rather not install a new app or want to create a flashable .zip right on your Android, you can extract the template .zip, then re-archive it using a regular file explorer. Keep in mind that just like with using a program, you do not want to mess with the contents of the META-INF folder. To install apps, create a folder named "app" (case sensitive) inside the System folder, place all of your .apks in there, and re-archive the entire thing. For boot animations, add the bootanimation.zip to your "System/system/media" directory. The method you choose will not matter when you actually flash the .zip in recovery, just be sure to always keep a Nandroid handy in case something goes wrong.Follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: Get Android Pay Working on a Rooted Device

How To: Get Android Pay Working on a Rooted Device
Android has a brand new mobile payments system, and it's rolling out to most devices as we speak. Android Pay, as it's called, will replace the existing Google Wallet app as an update, and it brings some awesome new functionality such as tokenization and the ability to tap-and-pay by simply unlocking your phone. The only downside is, those of us who have already received the update have found that Android Pay won't let users add their credit and debit cards if their phone is rooted. On the bright side, though, you can work around this root restriction on most devices in just a few simple steps. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Method 1: Temporarily Unroot (Most Devices)For most devices, getting around Android Pay's root restriction is incredibly simple. To begin, open your SuperSU root management app, then head over to the Settings tab. From here, simply untick the box next to the "Enable Superuser" option, then give the app a few seconds to temporarily unroot your phone. Once the subtext underneath the "Enable Superuser" option says "Superuser is disabled and hidden," you should be able to add your cards to Android Pay without any issues. When you're done setting up Android Pay, just tick the box next to "Enable Superuser" in SuperSU again to get root access back, and Android Pay will continue to work as if you weren't rooted.

Method 2: Temporarily Lock Bootloader (Nexus Devices)With a Nexus device, traditional root methods involve unlocking the bootloader, which is another thing that causes Android Pay to refuse to run. As a result, you'll need to temporarily unroot, and temporarily relock your bootloader.Luckily, locking and unlocking the bootloader on a rooted Nexus device is incredibly easy, thanks to an app called BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices. To begin, simply install the free app, then open it up and grant it root access. Next, tap the "Lock" button directly beneath the Bootloader Status header. If everything went off without a hitch, your the app should now say "Bootloader Status: Locked." From here, open your SuperSU root management app, then head over to the Settings tab. Next, untick the box next to "Enable superuser," then wait for the app to report that "Superuser is disabled and hidden." Now that your phone is unrooted and your bootloader is locked again, you should be able to add cards to Android Pay without any issues. But once you finish setting up Android Pay, you'll probably want to put everything back to normal, which won't affect Android Pay's functionality in any way.So to wrap things up, head to the Settings tab in SuperSU, then tick the box next to "Enable Superuser" to get root access back. When that's finished, open BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices, then tap the "Unlock" button beneath the Bootloader Status header, then everything will be back the way it was before you started.
Note About Custom ROMsIf you're running a custom ROM on your device, chances are, you won't be able to get Android Pay to work on your device. This is because most custom ROMs are missing some proprietary files that Android Pay relies upon, so there's essentially nothing you can do other than ask your ROM developer to include Android Pay support. It's unfortunate, but this is an issue that should hopefully be worked out when developers start to learn more about Android Pay in the future.Which method did you use to get Android Pay working on your rooted device? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.
